Several decades of scientific research at the Motopos cattle ranch in South Africa identified Mashona as the most productive cattle breed in Zimbabwe.
What makes them so Productive?
-
Fertility
Data from the Matopos trials in Zimbabwe identify pure Mashona heifers as an early sexually maturing breed, giving many of their first calves in less than 24 months. Of the (7) cow genotypes tested, Mashonas had by far the highest calving percentage, re-calving percentage, and calf survival rate.
-
Low Input
As a smaller framed breed, Mashona cows have a higher relative grass intake, eating more grass than a larger framed animal as compared to their body weight while maintaining body condition. Healthy and resilient body condition has also been shown to be a primary factor in high fertility and calving success
-
Resilience
Mashona cattle have a high tolerance to extreme heat and a natural resistance to parasites and diseases. This makes them well suited to climates in the southern United States and quick return rotational grazing practices.
